Alopecia Occipitalis in Men & Women
Baldness on the back of the head is an element of the classical clinical picture of focal, or nested, alopecia. This is the most insidious of all types of alopecia areata, because even qualified specialists in the field can be very difficult to determine what the true origins of the disease are and, therefore, problematic to make any recommendations. However, this does not mean that it is useless and meaningless to search for the causes of baldness at the back of the head. Modern medicine has some knowledge of this condition, based on many years of experience in observing patients suffering from baldness at the back of the head.
In occipital alopecia, hair loss is strictly localised to the occipital region.
As a rule, hair growth is not suspended on the rest of the head. Patients with this diagnosis relative to those who suffer from other types of alopecia are relatively few. In about a quarter of cases, the cause of baldness at the back of the head is heredity.
Under such circumstances, it is not necessary to say that a person is ill, and the problem is, so to speak, purely cosmetic in nature.
There is a group of risk factors that are indirect (or direct) causes of baldness at the back of the head.
We will talk about them further on;
All causes of baldness at the back of the head and risk factors;
When talking about baldness at the back of the head, it should be borne in mind that the causes of the disease can be general body changes and gender-dependent. Unfortunately, baldness on the back of the head in men and women is sometimes different, with different underlying causes.
Common causes of baldness at the back of the head include conditions such as:
✓ Stressful conditions
✓ Prolonged depression and neurotic disorders. ✓ Very often (more than eighty per cent) baldness of the back of the head occurs against the background of these conditions.
✓ Emotional stability is very important and a light-hearted attitude to stress is unacceptable.
✓ Problems with blood circulation in the affected area, most often baldness for this reason occurs due to dandruff and (or) increased sweating in the occipital part of the head.
✓ The skin simply cannot cope with timely cleansing, the hair follicles become clogged and problems with normal hair growth begin.
✓ Immunological factor.
Due to changes in the condition, the immune system begins to react to hair follicles as foreign, hostile to the body and, consequently, switches on mechanisms to fight the “stranger”.
✓ Nutritional imbalance can also become an indirect cause of baldness on the back of the head. Particularly dangerous is the lack of protein, vitamins and micronutrients, which can be observed not only due to insufficient nutrition (when dieting, for example), but also due to an unhealthy diet with a lot of sugars, fat and fast carbohydrates.
The gender colouring of risk factors for alopecia occipitalis is expressed as follows;
Male pattern baldness at the back of the head is more likely to be caused by hereditary factors and appears in most cases after the age of thirty. In women, baldness of the back of the head is a consequence of hormonal failure caused by diet, pregnancy, menopause, neurotic states, etc. The baldness of the back of the head is often caused by hereditary factors.
Treatment of baldness of the back of the head. The main techniques
Treatment of baldness of the back of the head will depend on the diagnosis made to you. Therefore, if you notice alarming symptoms, your first and foremost step is to see a trichologist. The doctor will prescribe the necessary diagnostic procedures and analyses, including blood tests for hormone content, ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland, as well as a scraping of the damaged area of the scalp. Depending on the results, treatment is prescribed. Treatment can be medication, apparatus or radical (if nothing helps) – hair transplantation. Among the drugs are not badly established minoxidil, finasteride, glucocorticosteroids, anthralin, tretinoin. But it should be stipulated: it is categorically impossible to take them independently !!!!
Only on the prescription of a doctor, because they all belong to a fairly strong medications with serious contraindications. Drug therapy is often combined with physiotherapy. This is dersonval, and laser, and electrophoresis, and electrotrichogenesis. In any case, the specific therapy should be prescribed by a practitioner. Self-treatment of alopecia occipitalis is fraught not only with a lack of effect, but also with a probable harmful effect on the patient’s health.
